Kendraka

Kendraka, is a Sanskrit word for the nucleus of an atom. This band is the nucleus of the world of creativity for the artists participating in this music project, especially that of the band leader, composer, arranger and bass player Mainak "Bumpy" Nag Chowdhury. This is perhaps India’s only Bass Guitar Trio, the lead instrument being Maitrayee and other electric basses. Kendraka is a project that was ideated by a patron and friend Tapan Desai - he also named the band after 18 months of its formation in July 2009. The band has been a cauldron or pool of creativity, where inspiration of the artists in the band have poured in and have under gone thematic metamorphosis, changing with the rapidly evolving city life in the home town Kolkata, India.

The Kendraka experience, takes one to the confluence of the different cultures - Hindustani & Carnatic classical music, hardcore rural folk of West Bengal, of that of Purulia and Bankura, the urban folk of Kolkata, Jazz, Rock, Blues, RnB and even integrating Indian classical dance form - Bharatanatyam, all of this set to the backdrop of the modern complex urban thematic metamorphosis with emphasis on spontaneity, improvisation and on the ever evolving "cosmopolitan" yet "root conscious Bengali-Indian" spirit. Kendraka often defies genre in their presentation of music. The audience and Press around the world calls it “Alt Jazz”, “Indian Jazz”, “Fusion” etc. Mainak “Bumpy” Nag Chowdhury, calls it “Contemporary Indian Music”. Thus, it's ever changing ... change is the only constant force in life.
